Single-layer walls in an energy-saving house will work well if they are made of blocks with a styrofoam insert. According to the binding norms, a 20 cm thick layer of insulation of external walls with foamed polystyrene or mineral wool is sufficient.


The largest area of windows should be located on the south elevation, as on this side the energy profits from insolation will be the highest. The smallest number of windows should be designed in the northern wall, as these windows will cause the most significant energy declines. However, there may also be energy losses due to excess insolation and the resulting need for air-conditioning. To maximize energy gains and minimise losses, the south elevation should be in full sun in winter when the sun is low over the horizon but sheltered in summer. To reduce the old heat penetrating through the windows, it is worth installing external blinds. When closed at night, they can reduce heat loss by up to 40%, provided they are closed every night. To facilitate this, it is worth equipping them with electronic controls.
